What Do You Want To Be When You Grow Up?

For me, it was always easy. When I grow Up I want to be a nurse. It is written in my school journals from the time I was in first grade. I was motivated and consistent in a way that is unusual for children. I remember having blood drawn at the lab when I was 12. The nurse told me to look away from the needle. I informed her I was going to be a nurse and wanted to watch. She was a little freaked out by all my procedural questions as the needle entered and remained in my arm.

When I was a senior in high school I took an EMT class at the local college. I began working on an ambulance in a large city shortly after my 18th birthday. Car accidents, shootings, stabbings and blood of any kind did nothing to dampen my enthusiasm. I rushed onward to my known destiny. Today I am an RN and have never doubted that it was the right choice for me.

Now I have children of my own. My oldest is 11. She told me last year that she hates blood and being around sick people. She was so afraid that I would be disappointed because, as she put it, she would NEVER, NEVER, NEVER be a nurse. She realized, as most kids do eventually, that she is not her mother. No problem at all, I remember telling her. Just find what you love and you will be happy!

Last spring she told her dad and I that she is going to take her hobby of the past several years and turn it into her career. She wants to be the best chef in the world and work in Paris. She doesn't want to play soccer, she wants cooking classes. For the magazine sales at school while most girls are ordering 'Nick Jr.' or 'Cricket', she ordered 'Bon Appetite' and 'Gourmet'.

She is a fabulous cook. Everything must be made from scratch, especially the sauces. A couple weeks ago I took pictures of her making an incredible Rosemary Garlic Foccia Bread. I don't usually care much for bread, but this was to die for!

She is only just 11. She is strong willed. She knows what she wants be when she grows up. She has a plan on how to get there. She is afraid she isn't like her mother. Silly girl.

Wow, that looks great! Good for her. By the time I really thought food could be a career, it was too late (I'm too old to want to be standing in a kitchen 14 hours a day!)
So, I blog about it!

Laurie - I have always lived in California(4th generation), but Minnesota is my favorite state...Love the town of Ely! It rains a lot there! :)

Pamela - I'm sure she would love to cater. She loves cooking for others, on her 5th grade camp trip she planned the menu and did a lot of the cooking.

Lisa - I'm with you, standing on my feet all day would be tough. But I love to read your blog and you have some great recipes!

Wow - I don't know any 11 year olds who can cook that well. Just think - you will be able to hand off cooking to her soon!!

That bread looks quite wonderful. I always loved to bake when I was her age. Still do. Especially when it's rainy and cool.

I came over from RC's place, and of course, found Laurie here. I think I follow her around everywhere these days.

I loved this entry.

Well, I came over to thank you for stopping by my place, but then when I read your post I was kind of stunned. I also grew up in California, am an RN and have a ten year old who wants to be the greatest chef in the world.

Isn't that weird?

But then I read your previous post and snapped back to reality. My husband wouldn't build me a shed on a dare.

Oh, well. It was fun while it lasted.

Hmmm, she hates blood and doesn't like sick people so she wants to be a chef, interesting. I wish the cook at my local restaurant felt the same way, maybe then he'd be motivated enough to embrace the concept of hygiene.

I love foccacia!! It is one of the main reasons I have rosemary in my herb garden. Well, that and rosemary roasted chicken. Hmmm...I love rosemary, too!! It is one of those herbs I always have to touch when I am near it.

And I am extremely envious of your greenhouse!

What a gift! The part about finding somthing that you love to do and knowing what you want to be - that is FANTASTIC. I am grown with three kids and I still don't know what I want to be....

The part about cooking at eleven years old is an entire other story. I have a twelve year old that can't even turn on the stove/oven.

Thanks for stopping by place and commenting.

I think it's fantastic that she has such a clear sense of who she is. It always bothers me when adults tell children they will probably change their minds when they grow up. While that may often be true, there are kids like yours and mine who know themselves better than many adults do.

I respect her choice too!
